We will hear both from providers of internships and past participants in them, about why research-themed internships are rewarding, and how to organise one. We will be giving information about why you might like to do an internship, how to find one, when is the right time to apply, what funding is available, and what to expect. Three diverse companies, all offering summer research opportunities to undergraduates in a wide range of fields, will be attending. They will provide specific information about the internships they offer, graduate opportunities, and more general information about summer internships. Our speakers are: Tim Coles, Founder and Project Director of Operation Wallacea. Operation Wallacea is a conservation research organisation, arranging expeditions to dozens of exciting destinations all over the world (including Madagascar, Honduras, and Indonesia). These expeditions are a fantastic way to get involved with real-world research, and have produced over 300 peer-reviewed journal papers since 1999. Additionally, these expeditions have lead directly to the discoveries of 39 new species. Internships here are an opportunity to travel somewhere you might never otherwise go, and to contribute to our understanding of endangered ecosystems. Joe Parry, Founder and CEO of Cambridge Intelligence. Cambridge Intelligence is a Data Visualisation company. Their software, KeyLines, allows for the visualisation and analysis of complex sets of connected data, enabling users to draw fast and insightful conclusions. This is a link to a fascinating example of the connections they were able to draw on BuzzFeeds ‘TrumpWorld dataset, using their software: https://cambridge-intelligence.com/untangling-hairball-visualizing-donald-trumps-network/ (for reference: they conclude that, at the current depth of the dataset, the visualisation is more interesting than any of its revelations!). Adrian Alexa, Co-Founder and CTO of Repositive. Repositive is a genomics and big data startup. It aims to speed up genetic diagnostics by improving access to and searches of databases of sequence information. It allows users to intuitively build new search queries across over more than one million datasets, as well as supporting the sharing of datasets with collaborators and the community.
