Fusion Energy Panel
This panel is hosted jointly with the Trinity Ethical and Green Affairs Society. We have three speakers, who will be introducing fusion, and discussing everything from current breakthroughs to commercialization to how to get involved. We expect to have the panel speaking for 10 minutes each followed by 30 minutes of Q&As. Please see below the biographies of the three speakers: Dr Thomas P Davis is the President and Chief Technology Officer of Oxford Sigma, a R&D company that develops fusion materials technology whilst providing technical, materials, and regulatory support to the nuclear and fusion industry. Thomas has published multiple patents and research papers covering in-vessel component designs, materials development, fusion materials, and radiation shielding. In addition, Thomas is an Honorary Research Fellow focusing on radiation damage of materials at Bangor University. He holds a PhD from the University of Oxford in nuclear materials and MEng in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Birmingham. After studying engineering at Cambridge, Joe Milnes joined UKAEA as a graduate mechanical engineer in 2000 and has held a variety of engineering and management roles across the JET, MAST-U and ITER fusion projects. He is currently the Head of Operations on JET, one of the largest fusion experiments operating anywhere in the world. Plamen Ivanov was an undergraduate at Cambridge, then moved to Oxford for his PhD. He graduated in 2021 and is currently working as a postdoctoral research assistant at Oxford. His research combines analytical theory and numerical simulations of reduced models with the aim to understand turbulence in magnetically confined plasmas, e.g., those in tokamaks.
