As a photoexcited molecule breaks apart, molecular fragments generally follow conventional dissociation reactions. Sometimes however, they depart from the beaten path. So-called “roamers” are directly observed in the prototypical roaming reaction in the formaldehyde molecule. Despite their statistical nature, roaming is well discriminated from the radical- and molecular dissociation channels, using Coulomb explosion imaging and theoretical modeling.
