String Theory: A Unifying Principle in Theoretical Physics

String theory evolved as a framework for describing the elementary particles and their interactions in a unified manner. It has a number of distinctive features that give it a degree of consistency and a mathematical elegance that earlier theories do not possess. Recent developments suggest that string theory has an even wider role in theoretical physics, making remarkable interconnections between apparently very different areas for example, relating phenomena in condensed matter physics to properties of black holes. This talk will give a (very) elementary introduction to the background of these ideas.
